Is feeding a raw, prey model diet cheaper than premium dry food?

Question by Leah: Is feeding a raw, prey model diet cheaper than premium dry food?
I am getting a springer spaniel and just wondering. Also, how do you know how much of the raw food to give him?
@ Lorraine – how much would you say one of your rottweilers weigh? Just wondering so I can compare :)

Best answer:

Answer by Lorraine
An adult dog will eat approx. 15% of its bodyweight per week – or some say between 2 & 3% per day.

A puppy will eat not far off of that as they eat a lot more when growing.

As for how much – I find feeding raw far cheaper and obviously more healthy. I feed my adult rotties for approx. £1.25 per day and that is including organic chicken carcass which would be more expensive than normal butchers or supermarket.

There are plenty of pre-packed frozen foods for dogs as well of which I will use some such as tripe and these can range in price by a fair amount and depending on whether you buy one or two or have it delivered from a supplier as some people do.

Source butchers now and start planning

I also think you gain anyway as your dog will be healthier and not have to visit the vets so often.

Average about 40 kgs. The amount they have depends totally on the dogs age and metabolism. The youngest smallest b*tch of 32 kgs would eat as much as the oldest biggest male of 50 kgs purely because of metabolism. They now eat only approx. 1 1/2 lb of meat a day average.

Obviously a springer’s metabolism is quite high and therefore would burn off a lot, but that would happen whether raw or complete.

HALLELUJAH – live cover by Sarah and Ian Blackwood

My brother and I played a show on the back deck at my sailing club, this song had everyone in silence. Love this song so much. I want to share that live music is still super important in this world. We have to make things more organic!!!!!!

Pet Rat health problems?

Question by Casey: Pet Rat health problems?
I’m an expierienced rodent keeper; i’ve had everything from hamsters to guinea pigs to chinchillas! I’ve never had any problems with them but I’ve been considering getting some pet rats because people say they are more rewarding.

But I’ve also heard that pet rats tend to have a load of medical problems – is this true? & are they really worth the burden?

Best answer:

Answer by Courtney
I can certainly attest to the potential medical problems rats have. The past two days I’ve lost two of my boys to such problems. Templeton had a URI (common in rats) aggravated by chronic myco, basically bad respiratory issues. He went to the vet 4 times, and was on antibiotics for months. Usually this helps, but Temp was in a neglectful home before me and was left outside (also had to be treated for mites from this) so I think that likely made his condition worse.

Fezzik, my other fellow, I got at 5 weeks old. He was a sweetheart, and very calm. A little bit more timid than his brothers (I got him along with two of his brothers) but he was more affectionate. He had a very large abscess on his side, which would not burst. So I had to take him to the vet to have it removed. While in surgery the vet found several tumors inside him and we had to put him to sleep.

In all I’ve spend over 0 (6 visits, total, in ten months) on my rats and their medical care. Now, I think my case is definitely special considering the time between deaths, but you definitely need to be prepared to have to take them if a problem appears. They’re very sensitive and very smart, and shouldn’t be left to suffer. I think that’s the main reason you hear so much about rats needing to go to the vet. Their owners care so deeply about this species that they want to shout, make it loud and clear, that they are a commitment, just like a cat or dog.

Are they worth the burden? Yes. I’d do it all again. I absolutely love them. Their deaths are devastating, but they make wonderful pets while they’re here. I’ve still got three of my boys and I would never give them up.They’re the most rewarding rodents I’ve ever owned, no contest at all, and I’ve also owned hamsters, gerbils, mice, and guinea pigs. No chinchillas, but I’ve worked with them.

Pet Health Insurance for my dog? Good idea? And what should I get?

Question by ~♥_♥~: Pet Health Insurance for my dog? Good idea? And what should I get?
I am thinking about putting my 6 month old Pomeranian puppy on Pet Insurance. I have been looking at VPI Insurance and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with them and what they think of it.

Also, if you have pet insurance, which pet insurance do you have and are you happy with it? Which pet insurance would you recommend?

Keep in mind I am not willing to pay more than monthly for the insurance.
Just so you know, I do not allow my dog people food of any kind. He doesn’t eat wet food either. Plus, I plan on starting to brush his teeth at least once a week now that his adult teeth have for the most part come in.

Best answer:

Answer by Toy Fox Terrier
We have accident only insurance for my dog, because she is prone, like many toy breeds, to breaking her leg (two broken legs in her first year). We went with Firstpet and ASPCA (we got both, they’re each monthly). We, thankfully, haven’t had to use it yet, but we havent had any problems, either.

One thing, though, is to be very careful about checking what they cover and what they do not. Most wont cover any kind of genetic disorder (like hip dysplasia, or in this case, luxating patella)
